THE SEASON:
December and January were hotter and drier than the Pisa district has experienced in the last 17 years but we were all saved by some rain and cooler temperatures in February.
Overall, an extraordinary growing season. It started very early with fortunately no spring frosts to fight (no need to call the helicopters!). A very healthy, high energy year with beautiful dark green canopies across all the clones on the terrace.

2018 was the earliest harvest on record – we picked on the 20th March, a full 3-4 weeks before the usual average of 18th April. Despite the speed of ripening, the fruit came in with great colour and flavour and the perhaps a softer tannin structure than 16 or 17.

THE VINEYARD:
The vineyard is tucked into a corner of the Pisa District, Central Otago, close to the Wanaka/Cromwell Highway SH6. It lies on river and glacial terraces, sheltered to some extent from the worst of the cold south winds by ‘Sugarloaf’, a local landmark feature which marks the physical end of a previous glacial advance.
The dominant Pisa Range to the west reaches 1964 metres. These mountains create a rain shadow effect, meaning that the annual rainfall received on our vineyards of around 400mm per annum is approximately one third less than is received the other side of the range in the Queenstown and Wanaka basins

VINIFICATION:
Indigenous yeast.
Fermented in small open fermenters – lots of whole bunch.
Four weeks maceration.
Post pressing the wine sails across to the Yarra for the completion of MLF and barrel maturation.
Matured in 228L barriques, 25% new. Coopers D & J and Taransaud.
Bottled by gravity.

The Vineyard was planted and is worked by the Thompson family - Carl (also known as Thommo), Oscar, Sue and Quinn.
