Good winter rains left the ground with a healthy amount of moisture resources. Canopies were large and healthy and the fruit set was extraordinarily successful. We did a “green” fruit thin back to one bunch per shoot and the vine/fruit balance was perhaps the best we have seen in years. After a warm January, the flavours and skin ripeness came on very quickly. Even though days were warm, nights were cool. We picked very early to maintain fresh natural acidity and the Chardonnay bunches were turgid and pristine.

Hand picked and whole bunch pressed without additions.
Course settled to 500L French puncheons.
Indigenous fermentation.
Batonnage for the first month, then topped and let rest (maturing) for a further 8 months on
New and used tight grain French oak – 20% new, 80% older.
Coarse filtration only. Bottled by gravity.

The Vineyard:
Location: Gladysdale
Planted: 1988
Elevation: 420 meters
Soil Type: Volcanic loam (red / ferrous)
Aspect: North-east facing slopes
Size: 39 acres
Wombat Creek Vineyard is the highest altitude vineyard in the Yarra Valley, making it an ideal location for the production of extreme cool climate wines. The vineyard was originally planted in 1988 with the intention of producing base wine for sparkling production but over the years has been gradually transitioned to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for table wine. The underlying ferrous (red) based volcanic soil and rock produce a distinctively soft yet long and firm palate that contrasts with the finer palates seen from the nearby Applejack Vineyard (basalt based volcanic).
